Lufkin held its 30th Annual Flag Day Celebration in the atrium of Lufkin City Hall on Monday night.

Lufkin mayor Jack Gorden gave the opening remarks and asked that all veterans present at this year’s event sign their name on a whiteboard with a marker. The whiteboard, displayed behind the speaker’s podium, will help city officials identify and keep record of which veterans were present at the event.

The veterans also received an ovation of their own, after being asked by Gorden to stand and be recognized by those in the audience.

Rev. Richard Griffin, pastor at Mount Olive Baptist Church, gave the invocation for this year’s celebration. Griffin gave blessings to not only the U.S. veterans present in city hall, but for all of those who have “stood on the shores of instability” in the armed services, past and present.

State Rep. Jim McReynolds (D-Lufkin) also spoke about both the American flag and the flag of Texas, and its representation of courage and liberty. McReynolds said it was a “tremendous joy” to stand and speak about the spirit of America and the veterans who have defended it.  Read more about it in the Lufkin Daily News. See the video of the 2010 flag day ceremony here.

On Monday, May 17, 2010, Lufkin Police Department began a Traffic Crash Reduction Initiative in eleven specific areas of Lufkin.

In addition to considerable financial expenses, traffic crashes can result in injury, property damage, and death. Between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009, Lufkin Police Department Officers investigated 2,213 reported traffic crashes that occurred within the city limits of Lufkin. Those crashes resulted in the deaths of 6 persons, 20 persons reporting incapacitating injuries, 169 persons reporting non-incapacitating injuries, and 339 persons reporting possible injuries. The goal of the Traffic Crash Reduction Initiative is to increase public awareness of traffic laws and dangerous driving behaviors and to reduce the number of crashes and injuries.

The eleven target areas were chosen for selected enforcement following a survey of traffic crashes occurring during 2009. The target areas have a high concentration of traffic and accounted for approximately 1,000 of the 2,213 total traffic crashes that occurred during the surveyed period.  Read more about it.

KLTX Channel 15, the City of Lufkin's government access television station is pleased to announce that we are running the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s "Take Me Fishing", an 11-part video series.  The series segments will run between scheduled programming and will help get you from the sporting goods store to the water to landing your first big catch in no time. The series provides beginning anglers will all the necessary information to start fishing.

As TPWD Aquatic Education Coordinator Ann Miller notes at the beginning of segment 3, "The fishing department at a sporting goods store can be a little overwhelming."

And, asking questions of even the friendliest of shop clerks can be a little intimidating for those new to the sport. However, through the course of three short segments, ’Basic Gear Assembly,’ ’Tackle Box and Supplies,’ and ’Bait and Lures,’ Miller and TPW Outdoor Education Program staffer Steve Campbell guide new fishermen through the maze of available tackle, equipment and bait.

Lufkin is blessed with easy access to great fishing and this new series can help you get started learning this wonderful sport.
